East Bloomfield-Holcomb Fire Dept. (EBHFD)

The EBHFD has been serving the community since its establishment on February 12, 1922 by 39 men. An all volunteer organization, we still proudly serve the community by providing Fire and EMS coverage to the Town of East Bloomfield, Village of Bloomfield and a portion of the Town of Canandaigua. Through mutual aid we also assist the surrounding fire departments when needed.

The first piece of apparatus was a hand-drawn, two-wheeled cart used to haul water to the fire scene. At the fire scene a chemical solution was added to the water to assist in putting the fire out. Today, the fire department has two pumper-tankers, a large tanker, a mini-pumper, a brush truck and two ambulances.

The department's 25 active members are constantly training to keep their skills honed. However, additional firefighter and EMS volunteers are always needed.

We also are looking for volunteers in support positions, the Auxiliary and have a Junior Corp program. Any young adult 14 or older is welcome to join the Jr. Corp. The EBHFD is located at 105 Main Street in the Village of Bloomfield. Stop by on a Monday night around 7:00 PM or call 657-7422 and leave a message to become a member of our team.

Facts about the West Bloomfield Fire Department

The WBFD was formed in 1951. We celebrated 50 years in 2001!

We have about 22 active firefighters—all members are volunteers.

We receive emergency calls through the Ontario County 911 center, using special pagers.

Most firefighters come to the firehouse to answer the call, others go directly to the scene, depending on the incident location.

WBFD line officers include: Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 1 Captain, and 3 Lieutenants

We maintain five fire trucks—A Pumper, Pumper-Tanker, 2000 Gal. Tanker, Grass Truck, and a Rescue/Command Vehicle.

On average, we receive 60-80 emergency calls per year.

Not all calls are for fires—we also help at car accidents, fuel spills, searches and water problems.

We work closely with other fire departments under "mutual aid" plans.

Firefighting equipment includes: Personal "Turnout" gear (basic cost—about $1800), Airpacks, Hoselines, and Handlights.

A firefighter's main objectives are: #1–Saving lives, #2–Protecting Exposures, #3–Extinguishing Fire

We hold drills and business meetings on Monday nights.

Drills are typically held at the firehouse or at the Ontario County Training Facility.

Consider joining us!—Any resident 18 years or older is eligible to apply for membership. For more information, visit the Firehouse on any Monday evening (except holidays) after 7 P.M. The WBFD is located on County Rd. 37, just south of Routes 5 & 20.

Some additional and interesting facts about the Ionia Volunteer Fire Co.

We reside in the Town of West Bloomfield and work very closely with the West Bloomfield Fire Department. We are the first responding fire company to the 250 homes in the northeast portion of the town. However, these days we respond to all calls with the West Bloomfield Fire Department due to declining membership in both departments.

The fire department was formed as a result of a devastating house fire across from the Methodist Church back in the early 1950s.

The current firehouse was built completely by the members with the help of some people from the community. The last addition was the two east bays, which was added in 1978.

The farthest call that we have ever responded to was in Hornell in 1972 to pump basements as a result of the flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes.

One of the most devastating fires was in 1993 when the famous Locust Lawn restaurant burned to the ground.

Consider joining us! We have three types of membership:

Active: for those people who want to particiapate in fighting fires as well as fundraising activities, building and ground maintenance, hold business offices, etc.

Service: for those people who DO NOT wish to fight fires BUT DO wish to help maintain the building and grounds, hold business offices, help with fundraising activities, etc.

Future Firefighter: for high school students who would like to get involved in firefighting activities. Students are not allowed to participate after 9 PM in the evening on school nights and are restricted in the duties they may perform at an actual fire call.

You provide the time and we will provide the training. Any resident 18 years or older is eligible to apply for membership. For more information, visit the firehouse on any Monday evening (except holidays) after 7 P.M.
